Should I buy a macbook or an ipad 2?

I am going into high school and need something for both schoolwork and pleasure. I have a smartphone with 3g and a old laptop which is running slow. I need to know what would be best for me to save up for. Can I make documents on the ipad? Or should I just get a portable laptop?
