Question about a universal remote control for a portable DVD?

Hi. So I have this RCA portable DVD. It's a nice little gadget but the remote control totally died. I tried replacing the little coin-size battery for it, and NOTHING! So, I was wondering if I can just go to the store and get a Universal remote and program it for RCA dvd's. Do you think it will work with this portable DVD? Or do I need to pay $35 to replace the remote in it? I really don't want to pay that amount of money if I don't have to.
