In Minecraft why can't I find any iron?

I'm playing Minecraft and I am underground and I always find stone, maybe some gravel, bedrock is directly below me, and rarely I find redstone. The thing is, I never find anything else and I mined about 15x 64x cobblestone. Is iron really that rare or am I doing something wrong?
