How can a plains landscape change to a mountain landscape through time?

the answer to both of your questions is, compression caused by a colisional plate boundary. the resuktant landform is fold mountains such as the Himalayas. what happens is two continental plates converge together, and as none of them are denser than the other they collide compressing the ocean trench sediments and the crust itself to form huge mountain ranges known as fold mountains.
